Landsend Match Lake, 26 July (12 pegs)

I thought we had 18 booked in for this one at some point but come Sunday morning that number had reduced to 12 due no doubt to the crappy weather forecast.
Friday had been cold, wet and miserable all day and after a break on Saturday more of the same was due today.
It was mainly down to the fact that I'd not been out for the last two weekends that I was still semi-keen but I have to admit I wasn't looking forward to a day sat on a box in the wind and rain and had to force myself out of bed and, after a hurried stop for nourishment at Shipham cafe, made it to Landsend with about 5 minutes to spare.

Alan was in charge of proceedings, pegging every other peg (almost) and  paying out the top 3 and 1 silvers.
And he also made it pole only to save any controversy which I thought was a good move.
I pulled out peg 17, no complaints as I was on the more sheltered side and Alan wasn't complaining either as he drew 13  which had won the Saturday open with 133lbs although he had Chris Davis opposite on 11 so had his work cut out today. I think Chris has been banned from Ivy house to give Tony Rixon and the locals a bit more of a chance of framing.

For company today I had Rich Jones on 19 and Lee Williams on 15, although I could only see their poles as the trees and bushes have grown back with a vengeance since their trim last year, but this probably wasn't such a bad thing.
Opposite on peg 7 I could make out Lee Waller through the gaps in the trees (he's not easy to miss) and on 5 the Gimp had settled in for the day.

My plans for the day were to fish short (5/6m) and down the edges with corn or meat so that I could easily feed by hand and stay as comfortable as possible, no chasing mud suckers on the far bank today ....
However, as we were tackling up the rain eased off and the wind dropped so I set up a shallow rig for banded pellet across at 14m (or so I thought).

My bait stash consisted of meat and corn to be supplemented by whatever pellet I had left in the bag from the last outing ... there wasn't any, so I paid a quick visit down to Lee Williams to scrounge some 6mm's.

Kicking off the match I fed all the short lines with corn, meat and pellet, pinged a few pellets over to the island and went across with a banded 6mm.
With 14m on I was nowhere near the far bank so I hastily blew the cobwebs off the 16m section and proceeded to annoy the residents by impaling them in places where they didn't want to be hooked and loosing them (some people never learn)!
By the end of the first hour I'd landed 2 (1 in the mouth) and released about 6 although I wasn't counting.
It was a different story for Richard next door as he had adopted a far more sensible approach and stuck to deeper water at 13m and had a great first hour, putting 9 fish in the net so a battering was on the cards.
Both Lees were getting a few as well so it was already looking like a double-battering.
I had a bit of fizzing happening on the left hand 6m line so went in on that with a piece of corn on the hook and it wasn't long before a carp gave itself up.
That was soon followed by a 1½lb skimmer and then a bigger carp that was fouled in the wing and took an age to land having swam round the peg in ever decreasing circles and annoyingly knackered the peg for a fair while.

I spent the rest of the match swapping round the various lines and picking odd fish off.  The margins were disappointing although I think I was being a bit too careful with the bait to make it last, the left hand 6m line seemed the best but I also had fish from the right hand short line on meat and across at 13m, again on meat.
The 16m pellet rig didn't last to the end of the match as the foul-hookers finally got the better of it and although I hadn't took too much notice of what I'd caught, by the "all out" I was guessing at 60lbs, as were mostly everyone else.

Chris Davis didn't disappoint and made the most of his guest pass with 120lbs of mostly small carp.
Alan's "60lb" miraculously grew into 90lbs for second and Chris Szakacs managed 3rd place with 80-14.

The silvers pool was safely covered by The Gimp with 30-4 which included a nice tench and some big skimmers caught on pellet with the rest falling to worm and caster (I think).
My collection of carp and 2 skimmers went 59-12 (no scandalous underestimation from me) which was one of the lower weights on the day
as the lake fished really well overall and it was a close result with 10lbs separating six places so I really quite enjoyed it as the weather wasn't as bad as I was expecting and the only downside was having to give Alan one of his pound coins back.

I wasn't quite so disheartened about giving Lee a pound as it was a fair bit cheaper than buying pellets from Scott's!

Landsend 25 May / Shiplate 01 June

They say that you can wait ages for a bus and then two turn up together, well in this case it's three but to save Darren North's internet data allowance I'm going to condense the first two posts into one and save the best one for tomorrow!

Landsend, Match & Speci Lakes, 24 May (24 pegs)

24 booked into this one which was our best turnout of the year so far and, no doubt must have been like Christmas-come-early at the Duckett mansion.

As a result we had two sections on Match Lake and a section on the back side of Speci.

The weather was good, warm and sunny with a gentle breeze (ideal), and even though the results from the Saturday open weren't encouraging most were expecting a decent match.

It turned out to be a bit of a struggle on Match Lake and the section on Speci fished a whole lot better.

Winner on the day and riding on his success drawing ability from the previous match at Trinity was Lee Williams on peg 32 (his first match on the Specimen lake and I suspect not his last) with 108-8

Fortunately for Lee he had John Bradford next door in 31 which is always good news as he is allergic to anything over a pound in weight but he did hang around long enough to win the silvers with a pitiful 17-9.

Mark Radford was 2nd with 91-11 from peg 30, making the most of the fish that turned left instead of right out of the Gimp's peg!

The best of the rest was Brian corner-peg Shanks with a late charge from peg 1 on Match Lake that gave him 82-10 which was just enough to fend off Steve O' Toole's 73-9 from peg 5 and Ryan Radford who weighed in 72-14 from peg 3.

As for me, I had a next-peg battle on Speci with with Will Dearlove which I lost by 2lbs-ish but I managed to scrape 2nd in the section thanks to a couple of defaults, and a pound coin off of Alan Healey which went straight into Lee's Holiday fund.

Shiplate, Hawthorns, 01 June (11 pegs)

After hitting the dizzy heights of 24 fishing at Landsend it was back to reality  this week with a turnout of 11 on Hawthorn's Lake at Shiplate Farm Fishery.

Again the weather conditions were excellent but again the fishing was a bit "iffy".

I drew peg 3 which is apparently a "feast or famine" peg but unfortunately for me Brian Shanks was on 1 with nobody in between us.

My mission for the day, if I chose to accept it, was to intercept any fish that were heading into peg 1 from the rest of the lake.

For whatever reason I chose to ignore that mission and instead pissed about for six hours getting nowhere slowly and feeding two pints of casters down the edge for no apparent reason!

The highlight of my day was the large breakfast at Shipham Cafe which I almost (but not quite) managed to consume and the company of a huge family of newly hatched ducks that had not yet developed a fear of bait bags  or anything else for that matter!

To cut a long story short, Brian had a thoroughly enjoyable day's pleasure fishing in peg 1, easily winning the match by plopping and slapping an 8mm pellet shallow all around his peg and ending up with 105-9 for an easy win.

He did have a 30 minute spell when everything went wrong which happened to coincide with the 30 minutes that I was sat behind him with the camera.

I did contemplate making a space amonst the goose shit to have a siesta on tghe grass but "one more chuck' syndrome got the better of me and my solitary carp of ?? went back early which I would have done too if  the results board and weigh-gear weren't under my control (the joys of being match secretary)!

To ease the pain somewhat I fished the  following Thursday evening knock-up back at Landsend where I drew peg 7 (photo at the top of this post) and managed second with 60-ish lbs.

Important Update!

Please note that for the foreseeable future the venue for our monthly meetings and the Christmas festivities has been changed to The Horseshoe at Siston Common. I hope this doesn't cause a problem for anyone but the Midland Spinner has had some "reliability problems" of late and the manager at The Horseshoe has assured me we will be well looked after so I'm happy with that.

(And it's within falling distance from my front door)!

If anyone has a problem with this please let me know.

Last Sundays match was scheduled for Landsend Match Lake but due to low numbers Mike thought it would be better to have it on the Speci Lake as he reckoned the Match Lake would fish crap with too much space for the fish to hide in.

As far as I'm concerned nobody knows a fishery better than it's owner so I was happy to go along with that, especially as I wasn't fishing it anyway.

I haven't seen the full result as yet but it was a repeat of the previous result at Harescombe with Chris (corner peg) Szakacs taking top honours from peg 33 with 127lbs ish and Lionel Legge taking second with 80ish from peg 31.

Thanks to Simon Belcham for reprising his role as match organiser for the day although I suspect he secretly enjoyed it.

And even more finally some of you may be wondering why I wasn't fishing Sunday so wonder no more!

I managed to invite myself to an end of series match at Rolfs Lake in Oxford.

As a first timer at the venue I was the butt of much abuse (nothing new there) and was expecting to be going home with my tail between my legs and my pole in a million pieces but it didn't quote turn out as bad as that as I drew peg 2 ( a corner as peg 3 is redundant) and with all my elastics tightened up enough to play tunes on them I managed 9 carp for 86-ish and even managed to pick up second in my section albeit by default.

My last fish swam behind the keepnets and after a bit of comedy I managed to thread the topkit behind and it was still on but despite much pulling I couldn't get it's head up and the hook pulled out which was a shame as it was well over 20lbs and would have won me the section and got me 3rd but I guess nobody ever won anything with lost fish and if that was the case Adam Caswell would win every Psv match!

Landsend, Match Lake, 15 September (15 pegs)

Fifteen fishing today which was a good number although one more would have been ideal in that the cost of the lake would have been covered.
The weather forecast was not good at all with strong winds and rain forecast for most of the day but we were lucky in that the wind seemed to blowing over the top of us and the rain wasn't as bad as I'd expected, at least not until we were heading home when it became a bit more biblical so we got away lightly there.
Some familiar faces on familiar pegs today with Alan on 13, Will on 24 and Kev Jefferies on 19 (again) and presumably keen to improve on his dismal performance from this peg last time round.
Those of you that know this lake will be aware that there are more fish in peg 19 than there is water but anyway .....
Following the all-in, which was on time this week as I had all my rigs made up the night before, it was apparent that Adam Caswell was catching a few by all the splashing and bullshit coming from peg 1, other than that, Kev Jefferies was having a "torrid" time sticking hooks into various parts of fish across towards the island and also Bob Warren in 22 was sneaking a few from across although, as seems to be the norm here, he was foulhooking more than he was landing.
I couldn't see much else from my vantage point but apparently Lionel Legge was catching well on meat short over on peg 3 which was unfortunate because it was the golden peg and I'd said at the draw that if anyone managed to win the match from peg 3 I'd double the golden peg money (great idea)!
As it turned out the lake had fished well below par, maybe because there had been some cold nights previously.  First to weigh in was Adam Caswell on peg 1 with 52-4 but that was soon eclipsed by Lionel who dumped 66-10 onto the scales which looked like it was going to be hard to beat but luckily (for my pocket) Rocket Ron Hardiman saw that off with 71-8 from peg 15.
Simon Belcham took the Silvers honours from peg 9 with an impressive mixed net of maggot caught fish for 20-10.

As for me, I'd based my plans on a "catch anything" day which meant feeding the margins and the track with micros and "stunned" maggots in groundbait.
The maggots were supposed to be dead after their spell in the freezer but once thawed most of them re-incarnated themselves hence "stunned".
I didn't have to wait long for a bite over the groundbait down the track but the strike didn't connect with anything for the first 2 feet so needless to say that one was neatly hooked in the pelvic fin but he came in after giving me the runaround.  That line didn't produce much after but the margin down towards the empty peg 20 gave up a few perch and seeing as both Bob and Kev either side of me were loosing a few across I had a try at 16m where the piss-takers were waving their tails at me.
  This resulted in a few fish, some hooked in the mouth, but it was hard work and after loosing a monstrous ghostie I gave in and fished the rest of the match down the edge which produced a few more proper carp on the stunned maggots for a final total of 49-7.

It's probably worth a mention that one of those dnw's was Kev Jefferies on 19 who packed up early after yet another very torrid day and sloped off for an early bath looking a bit downbeat.
I suspect he will be off to fish the open at Windmill next Sunday as he's good there and kicked Tony Rixon and Shaun Townsend's asses either side of him in a recent match there, so good luck with that Kev!

Landsend, John's Lake, 11 August (11 pegs)

Only 11 fishing today so plenty of room for everyone but the downside was there would only be one payout in the silvers.  This wasn't too much of a problem however, as nobody was actually fishing for them, I think Alan Healy may have spent some time targeting silvers but never made a very good job of it but then he never made a very good job of fishing for the carp either!
Pete Uzzell had a flying start in corner peg 41 catching two fish almost straight away on caster as did his opposite number Ryan Radford in 70.
But the winner by a long way was the Westerleigh pools rapist, Brian Shanks with 120-11 from peg 61, which was just short of Mike Duckett's ambitious forecast of what would be required to win (130lbs).  Obviously Mike has never fished a psv match as Brian's nearest rival (Ryan Radford) was 54lbs short of his weight with a far more realistic 64-11.
For the record Brian caught mainly on meat on his topkit plus one section straight out in front and not one single pellet was used in anger.  Brian got through 1½ tins of meat and probably would have caught a lot more if he had spent another pound on an extra tin (he sold the other ½ tin to Ron in exchange for use of his meat-cutter).
As at his previous landslide victory at Landsend Brian also won the silvers with an impressive 5lbs of accidental crucians which meant Mark Radford picked up the silvers money by default with 4-11 from peg 46 (awesome)!
I won't bore anybody with the details of my miserable performance although it wasn't bad enough to stop me taking another pound off Alan Healy which seems to be getting easier each week.
Walking back past Tony's match on Match Lake I couldn't see any pole elastic or hear any splashing (or any noise at all for that matter), just quite a few very serious looking faces so it will be interesting to see how they got on when Tony eventually gets round to updating his blog!

..... Well it seems I jumped the gun a bit there as there were 10 weights over 100lbs in Tony's match so I guess we are crap after all.  Perhaps I should leave it a week or so to update this blog in future, but last night when I got home I had the house to myself and a bit of peace and quiet to get on with it so Tony's comment (below) isn't too far from the truth.

Landsend, 30 June / Walters, 7 July

Landsend, Match Lake, 30 June (14 pegs)

No big weights but a close result.
The ginger whinger and his apprentice, Aaron Britnell and Adam Caswell both started off well which was apparent by the constant drone coming from their pegs which could be heard across the whole complex but it didn't last.
Chris Szakacs, on peg 5, had a frustrating first half which involved plenty of lost fish, a fair few lost rigs and head-in-hands moments accompanied by much muttering of Hungarian curses but he managed to get his act together for the second half and caught steadily catching on pellet tight across and a last gasp carp on the all out was enough to put him ahead of Brian shanks on, peg 16, to win the day and the $100 golden peg by just a few ounces.
After 30 seconds of fishing sensibly, I got the catapult out and it all went wrong again.
Thanks to our guest of the day, Lee Williams, who "volunteered" to do the weigh-in.  Lee is making a bit of a comeback onto the Somerset match scene and does a blog of his own.  Judging by the fact he was on facebook yesterday scrounging a platform I'm guessing he was fishing with Clevedon today at Durleigh Res.  Lee is a shining example to everyone of how to keep your gear in immaculate condition (OCD springs to mind), unfortunately he takes a bit longer than most to set all his gear up and make it look pretty which isn't a good thing at psv as some of our members get a bit irritable if we start late.
But we start when I've got my shit sorted, like it or not!

Walters Lake, South Cerney (Blue & White), 7 July

20 fishing on this one split over two lanes (less the first 5 pegs on each) which still left us with plenty of room and we only had to pay the peg fees which was a bit of a relief for me as it's a bit of a gamble when you book venues like this a year in advance regarding how many pegs are required.
Des Shipp had recently broken the match record here with 446lbs so everyone had brought plenty of nets (God only knows why) and with the proper summer now in full swing hopes were high for a good day but to be honest it was a bit of a struggle in the bright, hot conditions.
Matt Taynton was top on the day with a meagre 54-9 caught on worm over worm / caster across from Blue 17.  Mark Radford gave Brian Shanks a lesson in fishing pellet shallow to take 2nd from White 12 with 41-7 and Chris Szakacs was 3rd from Blue 7 with 39-2 caught mainly chucking a banjo feeder with pellet to the far bank.
Alan Healy took the silvers (by default from Mark Radford) with 9-10 of caster fish.
Luckily for me I managed to scrape a couple of pound coins if nothing else, I spent them on some of Colin Ellaways handmade floats and have named them "Alan" and "Paul"

Landsend, Match Lake, 5 May (13 pegs)

Apologies for the slight delay with this update but I've been a bit busy this week what with moving house and fitting in a bit of work abroad etc but I finally managed a spare five minutes to think of something to write!

At long last, after what seems like months of crappy weather, we were blessed with a glorious day (the warmest of the year so far) with wall to wall sunshine and hardly any wind.
We were also blessed with the Match lake plus the back bank of Specimen lake if we needed it but the numbers which at one point in the week had hit 17 ended up at only 13 which fits comfortably on the one lake.
The match on the Saturday had been won by Landsend superstar Trigger with (I think) 198lbs from peg 19 caught on meat at 5m and there were plenty of weights over the ton so we weren't too sure if the lake would fish too well.
The good news for Darren North was that he had the dubious pleasure of following in Trigger's footsteps on 19.  The bad news however, was that he had the Westerleigh Mugger opposite him on peg 6 and his accomplice, Rocket Ron Hardiman next door on 21.
I might add at this point that the Landsend superstar had also recently won off peg 11 which was where I had drawn (again) but there's not a lot else to say about that!
Brian spent most of the day fishing banded pellet to the island shelf at 14m to win convincingly with 181lbs 15oz which also included the best silvers weight of the day with 21-12 of accidentals.  And making it a clean sweep for the Westerleigh fishing bus, Rocket Ron took second spot with 124lbs exactly caught on pellet and meat rotating around the peg, which means I'm not entirely sure how and what he caught on but "rotating around his peg" should cover most things in the same way that "sunshine and occasional showers" covers the weather forecast.
In the meantime, Mark Radford had drawn peg 1 and spent a fair while crying about how this peg used to be the best peg on the lake but wasn't any good now since the bankside cover had been cleared took third place an ounce shy of Rocket Ron's weight with 123-15 (and his brother-in-law was on the scales).
Mark caught "Trigger style", mugging cruisers and later down the edge (yes, where the bankside cover has been cleared) and needless to say has now changed his opinion of peg 1.
Fourth place went to the Knowle West pikey / pheasant beater, Alan Healy on his favourite peg (15) with 101-5.
Silvers, as already mentioned, went to Mugger Shanks with 21-12 of accidentals followed by Richard Jones with 16-0 caught on meat short.
As for myself on peg 11, I spent a great deal of the match hooking and playing fish but unfortunately most of them were hooked up the wrong-un so a lesson was learned and in future I won't be spending six hours trying to catch mud-suckers in six inches of water!

Filling in the gaps!

A few technical issues (my 12 year-old iMac has gone off to Apple heaven)  and a canalboat holiday have lead to a slight backlog of postings on here so I'll sum up the highs and lows of the last few weeks in one go.

Trinity, Woodlands, 19 August (19 pegs)

It's refreshing to know that when I'm not there it's still possible for the draw to go badly wrong resulting in tears and tantrums (mostly from Adam Caswell who wasn't happy about putting his flier back in the draw-bag).
And it was nice to see, after much abuse from his staff at Fairview Engineering, Brian Shanks finally making it into the elite Psv 200+ club with 228lbs 8oz which is a new record weight for Trinity.
Brian (I'll hazard a guess) fished pellet shallow at 13m or in the margins (or both) from peg 17 although he did have the choice of four empty pegs around him with the wind blowing in.
As I was on Sunday roast duty I never fished this one hence the results were a bit sketchy.

Staunton Court, 26 August (11 pegs)

Most of the members of the elite Psv 200+ club have gained their claim to stardom at Staunton Court but the ranks of the 200+ club weren't swelled today as it was a bit of an off-day by Staunton standards.
With eleven fishing there were three pegs on the concrete, two on the top bank which had the wind blowing in and were the most fancied pegs, five on the long grass bank and one in nomansland on the bottom bank.
Alan Healy made the best of it with 95-2 from peg 2 which was in the middle of the concrete bank.
Alan caught strongly down the edge for the latter half of the match on a large helping of bullshit (as usual)!  Lionel Legge was a close second with 89-14 from peg 3 on the concrete.  Lionel is usually seen thrashing shallow pole rigs about but today caught mainly on paste in close. A man of many talents!
Will Dearlove was third from peg 1 with 88-7 making it a clean sweep from the pegs on the concrete bank.  Will caught close in with corn (I think) or maybe paste!
Fourth place went to Simon Belcham with 79-11 from peg 7 catching mostly on tares on the deck at 8m.
Strangely, the pegs on the top bank didn't fish as well as expected and neither did the legendary "bin" peg (10) occupied by Adam Caswell although, in fairness, it was the golden peg which usually spells the kiss of death!
No tremendous weights today but a close match.  Next year's Staunton matches are winter matches which means the huge weights of carp should give way to the big skimmers that don't get a look-in on the summer matches but are present in good numbers, should be interesting.

Landsend Match Lake, 2 September (11 pegs)

Another day and another venue that didn't want to fish to it's full potential.
Rich Jones cruised through this one though with 96-9 from peg 17 fishing corn.  Next best was one of psv's new superstars, in-form Will Dearlove with 58-5 from peg 1.  Will caught long down the edge and to his right margin into the tackle-smashing bush on paste.
Chris Gay was third from peg 15 with 49-4.  Chris had an eventful day getting bitten by red ants and snapping his pole resulting in a trip out in HMS Duckett to retrieve it.  Maybe not a wise idea to play an angry foul-hooked Wedmore carp with six sections up in the air!

As you've probably worked out, today wasn't one of my most memorable matches with my two skimmers and one perch going an estimated 14oz had they made it to the scales which they never!
Perhaps I should stick to canal fishing.

 

Landsend Match Lake, 15 July (10 pegs)

Only ten fishing today so plenty of room for all and after the recent deluge the weather stayed dry for a change so that was good news although a good downpour may have sobered up the match organiser a tad as he was a bit ropey-looking for most of the day after a night sampling the hotspots of Staple Hill.
The honours went to Chris Szakacs on peg 24.  Chris, having decided to stay to the end of this one, fished caster to his left and later meat along the end margin for 62lbs 15oz.
Second place went to Adam Caswell on 19 with 54-10 and Stewart Riddle took third with 48-14 from peg 15.
Top silvers went to Mike Wilson on peg 3 with 20-13 caught on chopped worm.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to attend this one as I was heading down the Solent at the time on board the Independence of the Seas en route for the Canary Islands (bummer).  However, having had a look through the results, it seems that Paul Elmes had a few fish in front of him and God only knows what Trigger was up to ... must have been up all Saturday night breast-feeding the Triglet!

Landsend, Match Lake, 12 June (16 pegs)

Two wins and a second place in his last three matches for one of the club's newest members, Rich Britton has just about made amends for his atrocious performance at Campbell back in May where he could only manage a pathetic 5lbs 7oz and second from bottom!  Pegged on the right side of a very wet but unusually wind-free Match lake (peg 17) Rich coasted to a clear win, weighing in 72lbs 2oz in total.
Simon Belcham, on the next peg and assisted by the ghost of Eddie Perkins (and Ed's goretex coat) took second with 54lbs 8oz followed by Adam Caswell in corner peg 24 with 51-10 and Darren North on peg 5 with 43-2.
Mark Radford, having "unfortunately" broke his pole, could only fish his top 4 but still managed to win the silvers with 29-0 from peg 19.

Landsend, Match & Speci Lakes, 20 Mar (18 pegs)

With a decent turnout of 18 for once, Landsend's multi-millionaire fishery owner and thoroughly nice bloke, Mike Duckett was kind enough to give us five pegs on the back of the speci lake to ease the pressure on Match lake.
The downside of this was that Brian mugger Shanks was drawn on 25 which is the corner of speci and wins most matches on that lake.
Mind you, if Brian had drawn the puddle behind the toilet he would most likely still have won the match!
The match itself fished reasonably well despite the fact that it was a bright, clear day with none of Landsend's normal gale force winds. And that a lot of fish were cruising around just below the surface enjoying the warm spring sunshine.
Alan Healy, keen to add to his growing pile of pound coins, got off to a flying start on peg 15, fishing his top2 just off the edge of his platform and next to a part submerged bush. While Darren North who apparently could draw a corner peg on a round lake in corner peg 13 was matching his catch rate.
Steve Burgess, on peg 19, was also catching well but was losing them all probably due to the fact that he was using 18 hooks and 0.10 line as he hadn't been arsed to make up any "proper" rigs!
Entertainment was being provided by Adam Caswell (pictured right) who after hooking up the island, broke his number 5 section and then fell off his box and broke his number 7 section.
Adam managed to redeem himself later on by catching well in the last hour on pellet shallow including one fish of over 10lbs that he had estimated at 7 (in that endearing way of his)!
Somehow, Adam had managed to draw next to his hero, mentor and brother-in-law Mark Radford, but following his winter lay-off Mark struggled to recreate the magic from previous seasons and could only manage 13th, avoiding being beaten by Paul Reed by just 6 ounces!
Brian Shanks was the winner on the day by a considerable margin, weighing in 90lbs 12oz consisting of 46lbs of carp and a hefty 44lbs of silvers!

Landsend, Speci Lake, 5 September (15 pegs)

With 15 booked into the 16 peg specimen lake at Landsend it was expected to be tough going and for many that was the case.  Not so however, for Darren North (Mr Consistent) whose golden draw hand managed to pull out peg 25 which was the only peg on the lake with an empty peg next door.
Darren fished pellet shallow into open water easily winning the match with 80-1.
Second in the running was Psv's paste maestro, Mark Radford with 67-10 taken unsurprisingly on paste at 16m from peg 38 followed by Mark's son Ryan on peg 40 with 49-10.
Chris Szakacs completed the frame from peg 33 with 43-10.
The silvers, as normal, was in the safe hands of Bob (The Bream) Warren with 14-8 of mostly skimmers taken on a variety of baits from peg 32.
Bob swears blind that he doesn't target silvers intentionally but having had a sneak peak at his bait tray I have my suspicions .... soaked micro-pellet ???

Landsend, Specimen Lake, 17 Jan 2010 (10 pegs)

Today was the first day that Landsend's Specimen lake had been "fishable" for over a fortnight due to the big freeze but even despite three days of reasonable temperatures, considerable rainfall and Mike Duckett's ice breaking attempts??, much of the lake was still heavily iced over meaning the services of Bristol PSV's shit-hot ice breaking team (Adam Woodland and Paul Elmes) were more than welcome, big thanks lads, much appreciated!
As a result, the outcome of the match was dominated by the effects of the ice.
If you were on the sunny (ice-free) side of the lake you were in with a shout whereas on the shady side, where the ice had been thickest, a bite was as rare as rocking horse poop, with the exception of Eddie Wynne on the relatively ice-free corner peg 33.
Winner on the day was Paul "why don't we fish lake 3" Elmes on peg 29 with 14lbs 10oz consisting of two carp and a quality skimmer. Eddie Wynne took second spot with two carp plus roach for 11lbs 14oz followed by Stevie Wynne on peg 28 with one carp and a perch for 5lbs 4oz.
Special awards on the day went to Neil Mercer for his unorthodox ice breaking technique which involved paddling around, waist-deep, in ice-cold water (serves him right for wearing a silly hat and wanting to fish the lake 3), also to Derek Lucas for having to suffer every piece of loose ice on the lake drifting into his peg.
And to Big Adam for attempting to weigh in an 18lb carp that had died a week ago!
One other special mention goes to Adam Caswell for blanking on the out & out flier and golden peg, nice one!

Landsend Match Lake, 4 Oct 2009 (14 pegs)

Brian Shanks nailed his second win at Landsend in as many weeks having been gifted "flier" peg 19 at the draw. However, it wasn't plain sailing for the Westerleigh based angling legend as Paul Elmes, on neighbouring peg 18, was also sat on carp and at the weigh-in only 7lbs separated the two of them.
With the water temperature dropping over the last two weeks due to the colder Autumn nights the Landsend carp appear to have shoaled as 4 out of the top 5 weights came from the same area of the lake.
The drop in temperatures also meant that they weren't having "the paste" and so proper fishing was the order of the day!

Simon Belcham claimed third spot from peg 13 with 57-10 caught mainly from the platform of peg 14 and Paul Reed was 5th from peg 16 with 45-3.
The only exception was from "Mr consistent", Darren North, on peg 9 (the golden peg).
Darren did well to take 56-15 from a peg that is usually left out of matches.



Sixth place was filled by Ryan (pullabung) Jordan in corner peg 24 with 40-4 caught mostly tight to the edge at 14m on pellet.
Top silvers went to new member Neil Mercer with 15-0 of mostly pellet-caught skimmers and a goldfish from peg 21.

Landsend Match Lake, 27 Sept 2009 (13 pegs)

With a gentle breeze blowing into peg 1, Psv's vice chairman, Ryan Jordan, set the pace early on to such an extent that after the first hour it looked as though he had built up an unassailable lead. Unfortunately for him though, despite making plans on how to spend his winnings, the fish in his peg soon dispersed to the other side of the island where Craig Edmunds ( on the golden peg 24 ) and Brian Shanks were waiting to capitalize.
Craig, fishing soft pellet at 14m into open water and along the edge, then managed to put together a steady run of fish throughout the match but found himself fighting a losing battle to Landsend regular, Brian Shanks who fished 6mm hard pellet tight over to the island on peg 20 over a light pellet feed to easily win the match with an impressive 109-5.
Meanwhile, at the opposite end of the lake, on peg 13, in-form Knowle West bagging machine and last week's winner, Alan Healy, was determined to upset the big guns.
Fishing maggot, shallow at 11m Alan caught steadily through the match to sneak second place from Craig by less than 3bs and weigh in a healthy 85-11.
Taking up 4th position was junior "Cookie Crew" member Adam Caswell (pictured below) on peg 6, who despite a fishless first hour, upped his pellet feed and managed to foulhook a steady run of decent fish, alternating between hair-rigged pellet and "marbles" of paste fished into the shallow island margins of peg 6 putting 70-13 onto the scales.
Silvers ace, Mark Britton, overcame a broken mid-section of his pole to hammer out 30lbs 6oz of quality mixed silvers from peg 11.
Match secretary, Steve Burgess, used his time wisely on peg 5 to test out some new rigs and methods (popped-up expander pellets) in readiness for the "serious" match at the same venue next week.
