Trinity, Woodlands / Rood Ashton

You may have noticed it's gone a bit quiet around here for a couple of weeks, but no, I haven't been on holiday or anything but after three dismal performances in a row I have slipped into one of those depressive states where you wonder why you bother getting out of bed on a Sunday morning.
In fact the way things have been going recently I reckon I'd struggle to catch crabs in a brothel but never mind, there's always the next match ....

So first up then was Trinity (Woodlands) back on the first Sunday in June and it was a nice warm day with a bit of breeze which under normal circumstances would have promised good weights for the 18 of us fishing.
But on arrival the carp in Ash Pool (both of them) were going at it like rabbits and chatting to fishery manager Misha who (judging by the size of her bump) has been as well,  the carp in the much deeper Woodlands lake had not started spawning properly and were likely to be more interested in following each other around than eating.
I drew peg 19 which is on the top bank and it was in the shade so while everyone else were stripping off and slapping on factor 30 I was shivering in my shorts and t-shirt.
The peg looked good though with a big reed bed on the right and an overhanging tree on the left. I set up rigs for banded pellet shallow and deep at 11m and a rig for corn in the margins which I was expecting to be my banker.
Unfortunately none of the above really came good and my best run came when I switched to fishing shallow at 5m feeding by hand and even that didn't come to much.
I ended up with a handful of smallish carp and accidental silvers for 36-9
The match was won by Ivy House refugee Brian Shanks with 85-4 from peg 27 and his sidekick Rocket Ron Hardiman was 2nd with 75-1 from peg 7
It was an entertaining match all the same especially listening to Steve o' Toole catching eels and Mark Radford moaning constantly about the lack of fish in his peg but the highlight for me was Alan Healey who came with a grand plan of feeding off the hordes of tiny silvers armed with 6 pints of dead maggots.
He weighed in 1 carp and 300 micro fish that totalled 18-6 ... That worked well then!

Full Result:
  1. Brian shanks (27) ..... 85-4
  2. Ron Hardiman (7) ...... 75-1

The following Sunday we were at Rood Ashton which has long been an annual pilgrimage for Psv.
The only chance of a breakfast here has previously been Wetherspoons in Trowbridge (or TrowVegas as John Atkins calls it) but they don't open until 8 which means a late start.
But the good news was that fishery owner Alan's daughter has now started doing bacon baguettes which can be pre-ordered and delivered to the lake.
I had one and I was glad I did, next time round I will be ordering 5 to be delivered at hourly intervals (order one and you'll see where I'm coming from)!

Rood Ashton is a funny place, it's only a foot or so deep on the whole but is stuffed full of carp, roach and small skimmers.
We don't bother with a silvers pool here although I've no idea why as there are loads of them in there including plenty of quality roach.
Generally peg 1 nearest the car park and the end peg round the back in "the jungle" tend to be the best areas but anywhere can produce.
I drew the first peg around the first corner which sticks out on a small spit.
I've done well at Rood Ashton before fishing paste in the margins but this time round (and God knows why after what happened to Alan last week) I opted to feed 3 pints of dead maggots down the left edge with a bit of corn and fish over it with corn or bunches of maggots to pick out the carp.
The same combination went next to an overhanging branch on the left at 11m and the same rig would do for the right margin at topkit range to be fished with meat over meat and 4mm's.
I set up a shallow rig to fish banded pellet (on the deck) at 13/14m and finally, as I had a bit of time to spare, a pellet wag.
There were a lot of fish cruising round in front of me so I started off on the pellet rig but all that produced were small roach that managed to choke on an 8mm pellet and swirls and bow waves from spooked carp.
Upping the feed brought in plenty of fish but connecting with any of them (in the mouth) was another matter.
Out by the tree branch with corn gave more roach and some carp but almost every fish I hooked I pulled out of.
In fact the whole match turned into a nightmare for me and when I finally worked out I'd been fishing with a blunt hook (caused by getting the plummet stuck in a snag before the start) I was too fed up to care about it.
The pellet wag was a waste of space (I hooked and lost one fish on it), the margins never came to life and it wasn't until the last 20 minutes or so that i finally managed to get some proper bites at 14m on the pellet rig.
My eventual total of 19-2 was only good enough for 13th place and with only 13 fishing it won't be a match I'll be remembering for too long.
And to add insult to injury, when I came round with the fishing bus to pick my kit up my margins were full of waving tails like something from a show at Seaworld ... why does this always happen!

For the second week running the match was won by Brian Shanks with an impressive 142lbs 3oz

Second place went to Pete Uzzell from peg 1 with 82-4

and the third spot went to Mr method feeder, Chris Gay with 76-0 from the "jungle" which conveniently brings me on to the highlight of the day which was when Chris got pulled into the lake by a particularly spirited fish along with his seatbox and everything attached to it including his phone.
Lee Waller commented that it was worth the £20 just to witness Chris's Tom Daly impersonation!

Full Result:
  1. Brian Shanks ....... 142-3
  2. Pete Uzzell .......... 82-4
  3. Chris Gay ............ 76-0
  4. Mark Radford ....... 57-7

Rood Ashton, 26 May (23 pegs)

Our biggest turnout of the year today (23) meant that every decent peg was in which included the two pegs in the jungle which are accessed through a swamp (aided by some wooden planks and the recent addition of a metal bridge).  The only peg left out was the "corner of death" on the end of the car park bank which for some strange reason never seems to produce even though it looks inviting.
With this many fishing I was paying out top 4 plus 3 sections and no silvers pool as, although there are some good roach in the lake, they don't seem to show up in our matches and for some strange reason, there are no skimmers in the lake (at least I've not seen one as yet).
There was a slight ripple of discontent that there was no silvers pool but seeing as Pete Sivell had brought half a pint of scrounged maggots with him it was all the more reason not to have one!
As usual, Allan (the owner's son) had offered a bonus of £50 if anyone should break the match record which stands at around 220lbs but that was safe for another day and even though I had an agreement with my neighbour to put our fish together at the end it was still safe for another day!
Winner on the day was Stewart Riddle on peg 20 which was the last but one peg around the back bank.  Stewart started off on the pole at 7m with pellet but was having problems with foulhookers probably due to the calm, bright conditions which meant the fish were spooking from the pole and after the first couple of hours only had three fish in the net.  A change to the method feeder with pellet however produced a steady run of fish and he finished off the match fishing under the trees in the margins with pellet for a final total of 91lbs 2oz.
Chris Szakacs was a close second on peg 18 with 84-4.  Chris had a couple of early fish on the method but caught mainly at 5m and down the margins with meat.
Third place went to Brian "mugger" Shanks on peg 15 with 79-6.  Before the start he wasn't a happy bunny as his peg was, apparently, too shallow (anything over 18 inches at Rood Ashton is considered deep) but he soon cheered up as his elastic was out within 30 seconds of the all-in and carried on coming out for the first hour or so but then it went a bit quiet for him but he kept a few coming out, slapping his rig around and some from down the edge.
In fourth spot and last in the framing places was myself with 71-9.  I had a couple on the pellet wag early but then changed to the pole at 14m with pellet but like Stewart, was having problems foulhooking and losing fish.  But in the last hour the wind picked up putting a ripple on the lake and the fish switched on to the pellet wag (which wasn't a conventional pellet waggler but a special prototype design known only to a select few).  In fact they were that switched on I lost three while trying to eat a packet of plain crisps so next time I will be taking cheese & onion.
Sections went to Pete Sivell (1 - 7) with 68-14,  Chris Gay (8 - 15) with 65-14 by default and Mark Radford (15 - 23) with 61-3 by triple default.
Although there wasnt a silvers pool, top sprat basher was Richard Jones with 4lbs 5oz which was aided by the fact that nobody else weighed in any.
Strangely, peg 1, which is normally a flier only produced 36-4 for Adam Caswell.
But he did manage to lose 26 fish which must be a new record!

Full Result:

  1. Stewart Riddle (peg 20) .... 91-2
  2. Chris Szakacs (18) ........ 84-4
  3. Brian Shanks (15) ......... 79-6
  4. Steve Burgess (16) ........ 71-9

  11. Darren North (17) ........ 53-9
  12. Pete Uzzell (3) ............. 48-15
  13. Will Dearlove (22) ........ 40-10
  14. Adam Caswell (1) ........ 36-4 (wasted flier)
  15. Alan Healy (23) .......... 36-0 (another wasted flier)
  16. Rocket Ron Hardiman (6) .... 35-9
  17. Ryan Radford (8) ......... 33-9
  18. Jason Bird (11) ............ 25-8 (also must try harder)

Rood Ashton Pairs Match, 10 June (21 pegs)

A full house today with 21 fishing on a typically wet and miserable June day.   I suppose a few more could have been squeezed in around the back of the lake in the jungle but it would have meant some serious battling through the undergrowth and a day's fishing out of sight (and earshot) of anyone else which would be no fun.
For a bit of a change, seeing as we don't normally bother with a silvers payout, I thought I'd make this a one-off pairs match with £60 in the pot for the winning couple.  As it happened the winning couple came first and second which was a bit of a flook but at least it didn't take me long to work out the winners!
Owner's son Alan was on hand to collect the peg fees and (as on previous occasions) offered a £50 bonus for anyone who broke the venue record of 225 lbs(ish) and I'm sure I saw him have a little chuckle to himself as he drove off as, for what it was worth, he might just as well have offered a £50,000 bonus!
As it turned out it fished hard with only the usual fliers producing anything of note.  The car park bank was particularly difficult apart from peg one which is always good for a few fish due to the huge reed bed that stretches out in front of it providing a home for the lake's residents.  Things improved from the middle of the left bank and round to the back where the best pegs (and the bigger fish) are, although there were a couple of hiccups.  Most notably for Adam Caswell who has been firmly stamping his name on the Thursday evening Docks series of late, who could only manage 31lbs from end peg 21.
But at least it does go to show that it is possible not to win every match from that peg!
Winner on the day was Mike Smith on peg 20 (the concrete overflow).  Mike (pictured above right) fished paste and pellet at 6m for a total of 98lbs 4oz which even he couldn't moan about.
Next best, and Mike's pairs partner, was Chris Szakacs (left) on peg 15 with 68-10 of carp caught on a banjo feeder (not a method feeder) with banded pellet and groundbait fished about two thirds across towards the island.
Unusually, Chris opted to fish the full six hours which was just as well as Mark Radford finished just one fish behind him from peg 1.
One-trick-pony Mark unsurprisingly  fished paste at 13m close to the reeds (and occasionally in them) for a total of 66-1.
Fourth place went to new member Pete Uzzell with 45-14 from peg 19 who also caught on paste at 9m straight out and to the overhanging bush on the left.
Finishing up the frame was another new member, Chris Mastrey on peg 13 who fished the method feeder into open water at about 30m loaded with 3mm pellet and alternated between banded pellet and a white mini boilie on the hook for 45-2 despite not having had a bite for two hours.
Poor Alan Healy had a bit of a nightmare in corner peg 9.  I've been told that this peg can be a flier when the wind is blowing in that direction (which it was) but not today as Alan was biteless for the best part of the match and despite a few fish turning up late he could only manage 18-4 costing him a "full house" of pound coins and another big dent in his collection which must be looking a bit sparse right now!

Overall result:
  1. Mike Smith (20) ......... 98-4
  2. Chris Szakacs (15) .......... 68-10
  3. Mark Radford (1) ........... 66-1
  4. Pete Uzzell (19) ............. 45-14

Rood Ashton, 10 Oct 2010 (13 pegs)

Rabbit stew and pigeon pie were off the menu tonight at the Healy household seeing as an unexpected win on the golden peg meant that the Knowle West pheasant beater was better off to the tune of £150 plus several £1 side bets to replenish the coin pile that had been rapidly disappearing over recent weeks.
Fishing paste and pellet at 13m and down the edge from peg 9 Alan weighed in 68lbs 8oz which was exactly 6lbs ahead of Bob Warren on peg 6.
Bob fished luncheon meat at 13m out into open water and could have won had he not lost a good fish when his hook knot gave up the ghost. Not only did it cost him £10 in the payout but it also meant that Bob would have to go out and buy himself a new hook to replace the one he lost and which had served him well for the last fifteen years!
Another surprise result saw Paul Reed finally take advantage of a peg stuffed with fish to grab 3rd place with 41-14 ahead of Darren North on the end peg flier who somehow managed not to win the match and settled for 4th place with just 40lbs.
Alan's win takes him to the top of the Summer League, ahead of Chris Szakacs and Mike Smith, and just 5 points behind Chris in the Year Totals. It also means that he has now won 3 out of the last 4 matches at Rood Ashton which goes to show just how well he can draw!

Result:
  1. Alan Healy* ...... peg 9 ..... 68-8
  2. Bob Warren ........... 6 ..... 62-8
  3. Paul Reed ............. 12 .... 41-14

Rood Ashton, 01 August (20 pegs)

Although the match was unusually hard going for many, Knowle West's very own "Johnny Kingdom", Alan Healy made no mistakes when he drew the end peg flier, peg 20 from the bag.  Fishing paste firstly in open water and then down his left margin he caught carp steadily all day for a total of 132lbs 2oz.
Almost 40lbs behind, in second place, was Neil Mercer who despite suffering an early ear-bashing over the phone from a rather unhappy wife (no surprise seeing as he had spent the previous night trawling Bristol's lap-dancing establishments until the early hours!), still managed to net 94lbs 6oz.
Fishing from the opposite bank on peg 4 Neil (pictured right) caught all his fish on 6mm soft pellet at 13m.
Never out of the frame, Chris Szakacs took third spot with 82lbs 9oz from peg 18 fishing pellet on the method feeder and later paste on the pole line.
Last in the money and only 8oz behind Chris was party animal Craig Trigger Edmunds with 82lbs 1oz from peg 15.
Section winners (by default) were Mike Smith with 39-6 from peg 3 and Mark Radford with 67-0 from peg 19.

    Rood Ashton, 28 March 2010 (16 pegs)

As there was a "no show" after the lake had been pegged out it was decided that rather than endure the hassle of choosing a peg to take out it would be easier to carry on with the draw and leave the spare peg in the bag. Unfortunately however, sod's law intervened and the spare peg turned out to be peg 17, the last peg on the back bank and the best peg on the lake!
In hindsight it would probably have been better to have taken peg 8 (blanker's corner) out of the draw but we live and learn. Without resorting to naming and shaming, let's say that "The Worminator" owes his mate, Yan a
big drink as the flying Dutchman never had a bite for six hours and I hope the offending article blanked at Golden Valley!
In future it would be nice if members that have booked in would let me know if they can't make a match, preferably sometime
    before the draw. [rant over]

Top spot on the day went to the highly talented Neil Mercer on peg 4.
Neil (fishing without his silly hat) fished at 12m into open water with pellet and weighed in an impressive 97-14. On the other side of the lake at peg 15, and sporting a healthy tan from his recent holday in Tenerife, Bob Warren fished paste at 11m to take second place with 74-7 while around the corner on peg 12, Stu Riddle made his mark fishing hair-rigged corn on the method feeder to take third position with 66-14.
Close behind, pheasant beater Alan Healy on flier peg 6 boosted his collection of pound coins by weighing in 64-15 on soft pellet just "ouncing out" Craig "trigger" Edmunds' pellet-caught 64-9 from peg 9.

Just out of the money was everyone's favourite carpet fitter and Psv's number 1 scalesman, Adam Woodland who could only manage 58-8 from the awesome peg 1!
In the league standings, match secretary Steve Burgess could only manage to scrape a meagre 15-8 from an absolutely dire craphole of a peg resulting in his nemesis, Alan Healy edging him out of the top spot by 3 points.
No doubt that will change next week as Alan is crap at Staunton Court apart from the one time last year when every fish in the lake was queued up in front of him and he managed to flook out 224lbs
Meanwhile, Adam Woodland climbs up to third spot ahead of Stevie Wynne and Chris Zaks while Paul "The Reedinator" Reed (somehow) sneaks into fifth place.

Rood Ashton Rave, 20 September 2009 (9 pegs)

Knowle West bagging machine, Alan Healy's recent return to form continued today (with a bit of help from the drawbag). Alan drew out peg 2 on the concrete outfall which, due to 2 members not showing up and leaving pegs 1 and 10 vacant, was the end peg flier!
Fishing paste close in Alan caught well from the off and ended up with a respectable 80lbs 2oz which was a good weight considering that the venue had been home to a large gathering of "ravers" for the weekend!
Around the corner on the "golden peg" (5), match secretary and winner of the prestigious Knockout Trophy, Steve Burgess, also fished paste at 6 meters to his right hand margin to give Alan a good run for his money but at the end of the day there is only so much that can be achieved from an average peg and he had to make do with 74lbs and second place (just one fish short of claiming the £100 golden peg pot)!
Meanwhile, Mark Radford, with a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp, had drawn peg 11 (complete with underwater tree branches and a "raver" having a morning paddle in the lake), and despite having a slow start, managed a trademark late charge to put 50lbs 14oz of paste-caught carp onto the new digital scales and almost broke into a smile. That was until he remembered that he had lost six of his best paste rigs to the underwater forest in front of him!
Mark Britton, on peg 11, followed in 4th place with 42lbs 2oz caught on soft pellet.
Mark, have a word with the "pasteheads" to see how it's done!
