The weather though, wasn't quite as warm as the new year mild spell had ended abruptly on the Saturday with a bitter North Easterly which eased overnight but still meant the temperature gauge in the van was flashing at -1 on the way down and warning of a "Risque de Verglace" which, for the uneducated, means risk of ice as I have changed the trip computer in the van to read French (out of boredom)!
Anyway, after a chat with Jamie who reckoned the fishing was best towards the middle pegs on both banks, it was decided to leave out two pegs in each corner and draw eleven pegs from the twelve remaining.
I was a bit concerned about this at the time as it meant that the four anglers on the end pegs would have too much advantage but as it turned out, Jamie's advice was spot on.
As expected, the fishing was hard for those that didn't have fish shoaled in front of them. so no worries then on peg 35 for Paul Reed who cruised into the top spot, despite taking a few breaks to advise his neighbours, with 24-3 of carp and skimmers caught on soft pellet and maggot over micros on the pole at 11m.
Second on the day was Will Dearlove on peg 26 with 19-8. Will caught all carp on the tip fishing the bottom of the shelf on the end of the island alternating corn and maggot on the hook in conjunction with 4mm pellet in a pva "teabag".
It would only be fair to mention though that one of Will's fish made up 90% of that weight, however, it would only serve to make me sound bitter and twisted so I won't mention it.
Meanwhile, Chris Szakacs on peg 33 unusually spent the match avoiding carp (they were probably all shoaled up in front of Paul Reed) but still managed third spot with an all skimmer catch of 12-0 caught on caster over caster and groundbait at 11m.
Full Result:
- Paul Reed (peg 35) ........ 24-3
- Will Dearlove (26) ......... 19-8
- Chris Szakacs* (33) ...... 12-0
- Lionel Legge (28) .......... 11-8
- Mike Smith (27) ............ 10-14
- Steve Burgess (24) ........ 6-0
- Adam Caswell (36) ........ 4-10
- Steve Tanner (23) ......... 4-3
- Derek Lucas / Ryan Radford (37/38) ... 4-1
- Mark Radford (25) ........ 1-12
Silvers!
- Chris Szakacs .... 12-0
- Paul Reed ......... 11-9
- Steve Burgess ... 6-0 etc....
