Bullock's Farm, Match Lake, 8 November (13 pegs)

New member, Stuart Riddle, made his presence felt on Bullocks' Match Lake with his first Psv match win since joining the club at the back end of the summer.
Drawn on peg 25, the former Lord Raglan / Warwick Arms match organiser fished corn over hemp and later, micro pellet feed (when he had ran out of hemp!) up against the reeds for a total of 34lbs 2oz consisting of mainly carp.
Agonisingly close behind on peg 9 was club match secretary Steve Burgess, who again fished corn alternating between the points of two islands at 14m but with hemp & caster feed to end up with 30lbs 5oz of big crucians (that looked remarkably like carp).
Also fishing a corn hookbait was third placed Stevie Wynne, on peg 11.
Steve fished 16m down his left margin to the platform of empty peg 12 to weigh in 20lbs 14oz.
In fourth place was Chris Zak (another ex-Raglan/Warwick Arms legend) with 20lbs oz.
Top silvers on the day went to Knowle West pheasant beater, Alan Healy, who almost doubled second placed Darren North's 7lbs 1oz with an impressive(ish) 13lbs 4oz.

Trinity Waters, 25 October (14 pegs)

Give "Mr Consistent", Darren North a half decent draw on a good day at any venue and there can only be one outcome as he proved today at Trinity Waters' Woodland Lake.
Drawing peg 24 on the central bank and out of the worst of the wind, Darren fished pellet shallow on the pole to win convincingly with 77lbs 12oz.
His performance was that impressive, in fact, that at one point he attracted a small gallery of spectators who were eager to pick up a few tips until they realised he wasn't Tony Rixon!

Darren North acknowledging his gallery who had mistaken him for Tony Rixon

Second in the frame and one peg down from the winner was Paul Elmes who fished the same methods for a total of 69-4 closely followed by Alan Healy in the opposite corner at peg 16 with 63-10.
First out of the money and sticking with his tradition of getting nowhere in psv matches was the real
Tony Rixon who weighed in just 55-7 from flier peg 18!

Viaduct, Campbell, 18 October (13 pegs)

With frost on the ground for the second day running the general feeling was that fishing was going to be a struggle but fortunately for Psv match secretary, Steve Burgess, the "fishing Gods" were still smiling.
Drawn on peg 129, Steve started on the pole at 13m with caster and corn but seeing Mark Radford catch an early carp on the waggler, he quickly switched to his trusty float rod and with an 8mm banded pellet fished on the deck was soon into the carp.
For the first hour or so, the bright sunshine was causing problems with seeing his float, resulting in missed bites and foul-hooked fish but as the sun moved Steve managed a steady procession of fish to 7lbs and despite losing as many foul-hookers, a final all-carp total of 70lbs 1oz.

Steve Burgess in action at Monk Lakes

Further up the bank, on the flyer peg 125, club chairman and wealthy landowner, Mike Wilson, had dusted the cobwebs off his fishing gear to enjoy a rare but welcome day out with the club.
Mike fished similar tactics to the match-winner finishing up just over 2lbs short of the top spot with 67lbs 15oz for a well-deserved second place.
Third place went to Mark Britton in Bob Warren's favourite peg
(corner peg 123). Mark struggled to catch fishing long into the corner margins and instead caught most of his 62-15 on the straight lead with 11mm pellet.
Fourth spot went to new member, Chris Zak, on his first match with Psv. Chris caught steadily throughout the match to put 42lbs 11oz on the scales.
Alan Healy topped the silvers pool from peg 110 with 21-11 caught on caster from the margins but unfortunately could only add one small carp to that total and yet again was forced to part with a considerable number of £1 coins in side bets!

Overall Result:
  1. Steve Burgess .... peg 129 .... 70-1
  2. Mike Wilson ........ 125 ........... 67-15

Sedges, 11 October (10 pegs)

With the Sedges carp unwilling to get their heads down a decent weight of skimmers with a couple of bonus carp was needed to frame and psv veteran, Bob Warren, did just that easily winning the match from peg 8 with an impressive 36-14 of skimmers and 2 good carp for a total of 56lbs exactly. Bob caught most of his fish on soft pellet over micro pellet feed with some better quality skimmers on paste.
Taking up second place was Simon Belcham on corner peg 10 with 18-8 of silvers and 2 bonus carp, including one of 15lbs, for a total of 42lbs 14oz.
Match Secretary, Steve Burgess on peg 12 managed 3 carp for 28-12 along with 9-12 of skimmers and a bonus tench for a total of 38lbs 8oz and 3rd spot.
Mr Consistent, Darren North, filled 4th place with 27lbs 2oz from golden peg 6 while born-again fisherman, Paul Reed, on peg 14, managed a carpless weight of 25lbs 4oz caught on chopped worm.
Proving that the paste season is drawing to it's close, Mark Radford on flier peg 18 could only manage 8oz of mainly small fish!

Landsend Match Lake, 4 Oct 2009 (14 pegs)

Brian Shanks nailed his second win at Landsend in as many weeks having been gifted "flier" peg 19 at the draw. However, it wasn't plain sailing for the Westerleigh based angling legend as Paul Elmes, on neighbouring peg 18, was also sat on carp and at the weigh-in only 7lbs separated the two of them.
With the water temperature dropping over the last two weeks due to the colder Autumn nights the Landsend carp appear to have shoaled as 4 out of the top 5 weights came from the same area of the lake.
The drop in temperatures also meant that they weren't having "the paste" and so proper fishing was the order of the day!

Simon Belcham claimed third spot from peg 13 with 57-10 caught mainly from the platform of peg 14 and Paul Reed was 5th from peg 16 with 45-3.
The only exception was from "Mr consistent", Darren North, on peg 9 (the golden peg).
Darren did well to take 56-15 from a peg that is usually left out of matches.

Sixth place was filled by Ryan (pullabung) Jordan in corner peg 24 with 40-4 caught mostly tight to the edge at 14m on pellet.
Top silvers went to new member Neil Mercer with 15-0 of mostly pellet-caught skimmers and a goldfish from peg 21.

Landsend Match Lake, 27 Sept 2009 (13 pegs)

With a gentle breeze blowing into peg 1, Psv's vice chairman, Ryan Jordan, set the pace early on to such an extent that after the first hour it looked as though he had built up an unassailable lead. Unfortunately for him though, despite making plans on how to spend his winnings, the fish in his peg soon dispersed to the other side of the island where Craig Edmunds ( on the golden peg 24 ) and Brian Shanks were waiting to capitalize.
Craig, fishing soft pellet at 14m into open water and along the edge, then managed to put together a steady run of fish throughout the match but found himself fighting a losing battle to Landsend regular, Brian Shanks who fished 6mm hard pellet tight over to the island on peg 20 over a light pellet feed to easily win the match with an impressive 109-5.
Meanwhile, at the opposite end of the lake, on peg 13, in-form Knowle West bagging machine and last week's winner, Alan Healy, was determined to upset the big guns.
Fishing maggot, shallow at 11m Alan caught steadily through the match to sneak second place from Craig by less than 3bs and weigh in a healthy 85-11.
Taking up 4th position was junior "Cookie Crew" member Adam Caswell (pictured below) on peg 6, who despite a fishless first hour, upped his pellet feed and managed to foulhook a steady run of decent fish, alternating between hair-rigged pellet and "marbles" of paste fished into the shallow island margins of peg 6 putting 70-13 onto the scales.
Silvers ace, Mark Britton, overcame a broken mid-section of his pole to hammer out 30lbs 6oz of quality mixed silvers from peg 11.
Match secretary, Steve Burgess, used his time wisely on peg 5 to test out some new rigs and methods (popped-up expander pellets) in readiness for the "serious" match at the same venue next week.

Adam Caswell foulhooking his way to 4th place!

Rood Ashton Rave, 20 September 2009 (9 pegs)

Knowle West bagging machine, Alan Healy's recent return to form continued today (with a bit of help from the drawbag). Alan drew out peg 2 on the concrete outfall which, due to 2 members not showing up and leaving pegs 1 and 10 vacant, was the end peg flier!
Fishing paste close in Alan caught well from the off and ended up with a respectable 80lbs 2oz which was a good weight considering that the venue had been home to a large gathering of "ravers" for the weekend!
Around the corner on the "golden peg" (5), match secretary and winner of the prestigious Knockout Trophy, Steve Burgess, also fished paste at 6 meters to his right hand margin to give Alan a good run for his money but at the end of the day there is only so much that can be achieved from an average peg and he had to make do with 74lbs and second place (just one fish short of claiming the £100 golden peg pot)!
Meanwhile, Mark Radford, with a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp, had drawn peg 11 (complete with underwater tree branches and a "raver" having a morning paddle in the lake), and despite having a slow start, managed a trademark late charge to put 50lbs 14oz of paste-caught carp onto the new digital scales and almost broke into a smile. That was until he remembered that he had lost six of his best paste rigs to the underwater forest in front of him!
Mark Britton, on peg 11, followed in 4th place with 42lbs 2oz caught on soft pellet.
Mark, have a word with the "pasteheads" to see how it's done!

Acorn Match Lake, 6 September (10 pegs)

Taking a year out from match fishing to sharpen his skills seems to have paid off for Ryan Jordan winning both today's match and the last one he fished at Viaduct plus framing in the previous match and twice in Tony Rixon's "float only" series! The prospect of capturing some pictures of the man of the moment, Ryan, in action also meant that Roy Garland was on hand to record the action for Saturday's Evening Post.
As ever at Acorn the draw was all important with the end pegs being favourite and the narrow middle section being the least desirable.
Ryan was drawn on peg 7 and with a comfortable reach to the far bank margins decided to fish in one spot, tight over, with lassoed 8mm pellet over micro-pellet feed to put together a convincing win with 67lbs 13oz. He caught steadily from the off but his peg died towards the middle of the match only to pick up again later but he was then hampered when he trashed his pole rig and had to make do with hooking his banded pellet rather than the hair-rigged version he had been using and this resulted in quite a few lost fish due to hook pulls and foul-hookers.
In the next peg down, match secretary and winner of the knockout cup event, Steve Burgess, [pictured above] had also chosen to fish the far bank margins where with careful plumbing, he had found a slightly deeper area where he was able to concentrate the fish. Steve alternated between soft pellet on the hook and paste and restricted his 6mm pellet feed to a minimal amount, just enough to keep the fish interested without causing them to back off too far. Steve was catching the odd fish steadily through the match and found small fish were coming to the paste while the soft pellet approach would produce the odd better fish. During the last hour of the match, as the wind picked up, Steve was getting a bite every put-in on the paste and was starting to worry Ryan on the next peg but with 25lbs to make up even someone with Steve's extraordinary talent was going to struggle and he had to make do with second place and another pound coin from Alan Healy with 44lbs 14oz.
Meanwhile at the bottom end of the lake, the increase in wind during the last hour had improved things dramatically for most who had been struggling through the earlier part of the match, most especially for Mark Britton on end peg 2 (permanent 3) who was able to put together a good late run for 40lbs 10oz of quality fish for a close 3rd place and also for Alan Healy who claimed 4th spot with 37lbs 13oz.
At the far end of the lake Mr consistent, Darren North caught well but was let down by the small average size of his fish and ended up with 30lbs 14oz.
Adam Caswell meanwhile decided to bring along his girlfriend and her best mate!

Staunton Court, 30 August 2009 (8 pegs)

New Psv Club Match Record!

It's been a long time coming but Alan Healy finally stopped leaking pound coins and ended his dismal run of form stylishly today by smashing the Psv club match record, previously held by fellow "Cookie Crew" member Mark Radford, and posting the biggest match weight of the year at Staunton Court.
Drawn on the concrete bank in front of the brick cutting shed, Knowle West bagger Alan chose to fish pellet on the pole shallow and took full advantage of a peg that was obviously solid with carp, catching steadily all through the match, more than making up for the disatrous last placed weight that he posted here back at the end of June.
Alan suprised himself and everyone around him at the weigh-in as he was convinced he had only caught around 20 fish but after five weighs he was more than happy with a combined weight of 223lbs 14oz which was almost double the weight of second placed Mark Radford.
Mark was drawn on the well fancied corner peg 8 (where Craig Edmunds had won the last match) and managed a healthy 112lbs 6oz followed by Adam Caswell on peg 1 with 107lbs 13 oz making it a clean sweep for the Cookie Crew.

Trinity Waters, 23 August 2009 (11 pegs)

Unsurprisingly Craig Edmunds' first visit to Trinity resulted in his first win at the venue.
Craig caught mainly down the edge either side with pellet on the pole to weigh in 58lbs 8oz from peg 11. He could have won by a lot more but, due to a hangover from Barcelona the previous night, he actually only fished for 20 minutes and also lost a lot of fish under the empty platform next to him. (Apparently someone told him there were no fish in the lake over 2lbs).
He spent the rest of the match chatting to boy/girlfriends on the phone and asking his neighbour, Paul Elmes, how many fish he had!
Not far behind, on peg 9 was Paul Elmes who fished mainly on the pole shallow and ended up with 50lbs 4oz, followed by Mark Britton at peg 16 who had a tantrum-free day and put together 37lbs 10oz of carp and silvers caught down the edge on maggot.
Top silvers went to hemp and tares expert Simon Belcham with 18lbs (plus 13lbs 8oz of carp) from peg 19.
Stevie Wynne continued his run of bad luck, this time losing his 13m pole section when it was blown into the lake by a gust of wind and then discovering the underneath of his car had fallen off!
Well done to Adam Caswell for managing to skilfully avoid all the fish that were feeding in his peg aquarium!

Sedges, 16 August 2009 (9 pegs)

A combination of inspired pegging and a long overdue return to form enabled Sedges venue expert Darren North to cruise to an easy victory.
Drawn at unfancied peg 3, Darren fished the pellet waggler to the aereator and shallow on the pole with pellet and hardly any feed to weigh in 90lbs 6oz of carp to over 12lbs despite at one point breaking his landing net and having to interrupt the owners' Sunday lunch for a replacement!
Popular club member Darren even included 8lbs of skimmers in his total caught on the pole just a few inches deep.
Darren's traveling partner for the day, Bob Warren, on another unfancied draw and his "jinx peg", corner peg 20 managed second place with 50lbs 12oz which included 17lbs of skimmers.
Third on the day was Match Secretary and recent winner of the prestigious Psv Knockout Cup, Steve Burgess.
Steve drew Golden peg 18 and fished 8mm pellet shallow and on the deck for 45lbs 10oz.
Top silvers went to carp-avoider Dave "the worm" Tippett with a very impressive 38lbs from peg 9.

Ryan Jordan showed his true all-round class today winning not only the match but also taking the Campbell mini series superpool and also the "silver peg" money.
Ryan drew the noted tench flier, peg 123, where Bob Warren had weighed in 57lbs of them in the previous match, but wily Ryan ignored the obvious and instead went for the carp and it paid off with 142lbs of them finding their way to his nets!
More usually noted for his skill on the pole in Tony Rixon's "float only" series, Ryan caught steadily all day on the straight lead with pellet fished to the edge of Alan Healy's peg.
Meanwhile, the prestigious Knockout Cup final proved to be a nail-biter between Avon Angling superstar Craig (Trigger) Edmunds and Match Secretary Steve Burgess.
Drawn next to each other with Trigger on the famous "spit", peg 128, and Steve on the unfancied peg 127 it looked like being a whitewash but Steve, wearing his lucky pink t-shirt matched with shorts and flip-flops had other ideas.
Steve foul-hooked a carp on his first chuck with the pellet waggler and by the end of the first hour had six fish in the net to Craig's none. But as the day went on the fish in front of Steve had become cagey whereas Craig's peg began to improve steadily.
Steve, then started to catch well shallow on the pole at 14.5m but was hampered by a jammed topkit whilst Craig, bored of catching silvers, found the carp were "stacked up" on his pole line, but by then it was just too late for him to catch up.
Steve eventually weighed in 103-15 to Trigger's 103-7 to ensure his name would be added to the famous knockout trophy!
Meanwhile on the other side of the lake, Alan Healy on peg 118 managed to shake off his recent run of poor form by taking second spot with a healthy 136-7 and his travelling partner, Mark Radford, finally got his paste-head together on peg 125 to weigh in 112-14 for third place although it would have been 12lbs more had he not broken the Viaduct 80lbs per net rule!
At the other end of the lake Stevie Wynne provided the day's entertainment when one of the few carp that he managed to hook decided to take his pole for a swim around the lake until both the pole and the fish were rescued by Rich Jones!
